JOB DESCRIPTION

SafeArt Youth Wellbeing Project Coordinator & Facilitator 

SafeArt is an organization of trauma-informed practitioners who engage creative expression, mindfulness, movement, social action, and connection to the natural world to support community wellness, healing and social change in Central Vermont. Our two core programs are the Healing Arts for Adults groups and the Youth Wellbeing Project. Healing Arts for Adults programming includes women and gender non-binary groups and senior groups, while our current Youth Wellbeing Project programming includes middle and high school healing arts residencies, trauma-informed creative expression art classes for alternative education programs, and a Co-Creators Summer Camp for youth 11-21. In addition we host arts workshops, yoga classes and community events that are open to the general public. 


For the past 23 years, SafeArt has worked to support young people, families, and communities to break the cycle of trauma by empowering people of all ages to dream, aspire and achieve. Our work engages multiple creative expression modalities, including visual art, drama, movement, writing, and music, as well as trauma-informed training. We are currently looking for two visionary trauma-informed practitioners to join our staff as Youth Wellbeing Project Coordinator & Facilitator.


The two new Youth Wellbeing Project Coordinator & Facilitator will develop and supervise SafeArt’s youth centered program offerings and facilitate SafeArt’s youth programs. This person will report to and work closely with the SafeArt Director who leads SafeArt’s development work, operations and events. All staff will work together to guide SafeArt’s strategic development as an organization.

Responsibilities:

As Staff Member:

  • Participate in bi-weekly staff meetings and professional learning workshops 
  • Contribute to staff-wide organizational initiatives 
  • Regular meetings with SafeArt Director for support
  • Respond to email communications in a timely manner 
  • Meetings with current or potential partners to develop new programs
  • Facilitate professional learning workshops for interested partner organizations in trauma, healing and creative expression 
  • Participate in end of year review with SafeArt Director


As Youth Programs Facilitator: 

  • Lead strategic evolution of programming to meet SafeArt’s mission and vision 
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with K-12 teachers, counselors, youth-serving organizations, domestic and sexual violence organizations and other social service agencies that host SafeArt programs
  • Author outreach and marketing materials, and conduct broad range of outreach activities to promote and book new programs
  • Design and implement program evaluations 
  • Facilitate middle and high school classroom residencies throughout the school year in “Building Healthy Relationships through Boundaries, Consent and Awareness of Trauma” and “Self-Care through Creative Expression, Mindfulness, Movement and Awareness of the Mind-Body connection” 
  • Facilitate trauma-informed creative expression art class for alternative education program students
  • Facilitate SafeArt summer camp for youth aged 10-21 
  • Respond to and facilitate youth programs as they arise and if we have capacity (SafeArt is often asked to facilitate one-off trauma-informed workshops for area schools or other organizations)


Key Qualifications:

  • Experience and/or education in the fields of psychology, mental health, art or education
  • Experience in one of SafeArt’s expressive modalities (visual art, drama, movement, writing, or music) and belief in the power of creative expression and the healing arts
  • Experience working with middle and high school youth in an educational setting 
  • Familiarity with the biological science of trauma, and in the structural and cultural causes of pervasive trauma
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed and anti-oppression practices and a commitment to them
  • Familiarity with rural Central Vermont communities and/or an ability to connect with rural people 
  • Familiarity with social-emotional learning approaches and whole-child education practices such as Restorative Justice, Positive Behavior Intervention Systems, Ethnic Studies and Universal Design for Learning
  • Understanding of the relationship between trauma, abuse, oppression, culture and societal structures, and a belief that healing and resilience must take place on the individual, family, community and societal level
  • Comfort working in a staff culture that is highly relational and emotionally attuned 
  • Strong facilitation and curriculum development skills 
  • Strong public speaking, networking and written communication skills
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically about programs
  • Ability to build relationships with all people including participants, teachers, donors and partners 
  • Ability to keep track of complex schedules, timelines and needs of programs across multiple sites
  • Personal practices to resource oneself and support resilience in the face of stress 
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, positive attitude, flexible, proactive, transparent, honest and trustworthy


Position details

  • SafeArt’s office is in Chelsea, Vermont; with one in-office day per week required. 
  • This position requires significant travel around Central Vermont to program sites.

Reports to: SafeArt Director 

Salary: This is a part-time salaried position. Salary is commensurate with experience. 

Benefits: Flexible schedule, ability to work from home part of the week, free or discounted educational and training opportunities, paid time-off benefits. 

Schedule: 15-20 hours per week, every Wednesday in-person and the rest of the hours are flexible (depending on the schedule for programs throughout the year, as sometimes there is more in-person time required).
